PPTP is just one of the many VPN protocols that you can use to protect your computer and iPhone. Are you sure you want to add this configuration?) and older versions of macOS, users could still use the unsecured protocol to their own detriment. Now, with the release of iOS and macOS Sierra, users can no longer use PPTP as a protocol and are being pushed/forced towards more secure alternatives.
Apple announced this development here, in which they explained that with the upgrade to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, PPTP VPN connections are now not possible. “If you’ve set up a PPTP VPN server, iOS 10 and macOS Sierra users won’t be able to connect to it. iOS 10 and macOS Sierra will remove PPTP connections from any VPN profile when a user upgrades their device. Even though PPTP protocol is still available on iOS 9 and earlier or OS X El Capitan and earlier, we don’t recommend that you use it for secure, private communication.”
Apple has detailed other more viable alternatives to PPTP–like L2TP/IPsec, IKEv2/IPSec, Cisco IPSec, and SSL VPN clients.
