Our top 3 rated VPNs are all very good VPNs to use. They all have top notch 256-AES encryption, no log policies, great customer support, excellent apps that are supported and updated, as well as fair pricing schemes. Sure there are little variations here and there between Private Internet Access, TorGuard, and IPVanish, but for the most part, you can’t go wrong with one of them.
Other VPNs are often much worse, but you might be wondering, at the end of the day–what is the fastest between TorGuard, PIA, and IPVanish? I’ve made a video here on the subject.
First I did a speed test on speedtest.net which is a good basic indicator of testing ping, download, and upload rates. Of course, VPNs often use compression and other techniques to make their servers seem faster, so I like to also test the VPNs with real world torrent downloads to get a better indicator of how they actually perform.
In this test, I found out that all 3 VPNs are very close in terms of speeds. You can see the results from this image:
Private Internet Access has slightly better speeds with a lower ping and higher download rate, while TorGuard’s OpenConnect protocol really allowed it to shine. It has the highest upload rate, while IPVanish ranks #2 for ping and download rate.
After the speedtest, I went ahead and tested all three providers with a Ubuntu torrent download. I got the following speeds and was very impressed with the results. It just goes to prove that a VPN doesn’t mean you have to download torrents slowly (of course, my internet is also very fast).
