Getting banned in an online video game SUCKS! Whether you got banned in a Minecraft Server, a private gaming server, or just a private server in an online game–you know the pain and ridicule that an online ban in video games can bring.
In a lot of cases, these bans are unjustified since servers are run by admins who love to hoard power. In others, they are completely justified–and maybe it’s time to prepare your apology. Whatever the circumstance, this guide will help you get unbanned in any video game that uses IP address banning to keep you out.
How do Video Game Bans Work?
First, we need to talk about how bans work. Most servers out there find your IP address since each player’s IP is shown on the server. In most cases, it’s quite easy, since these things are configured in the backend by the server’s framework for admins.
All an admin has to do is ban you through some command, whether through /ban, or another custom command, and then you are banned. This ban works since the console knows your IP, and whenever you try to log onto the server, it recognizes you and keeps you out!
So to unban yourself from the server, all you need to do is change your IP. Sure in some cases, admins might whitelist you to the server (take your information then add you to the server through Steam) but you can easily get around this by getting a new dedicated IP address to use (this means you buy a new IP and use it every time you want to connect to the server).
How Do I Change My IP?
The easiest way to get a new IP is to use a VPN. VPN stands for virtual private network, and it’s an app that filters your traffic through what could be understood as a “virtual tunnel.” When you connect through a VPN, you connect to a remote server and are given a new IP.
Or, as I mentioned previously, you can buy a dedicated IP from a VPN to get your unique IP, since most VPN ips are shared to improve anonymity.
Once you pick your VPN, all you have to do is select a server nearby your location and connect. If you choose the right VPN, you won’t get that much additional latency. I’ve used a VPN (TorGuard) before in video games and stayed under 80 MS.
Best VPNs for Video Games?
If you want to stay unbanned in video games, and still have a good time, you need to have a good speed. Unfortunately, not all VPN providers have decent speeds, enough servers, and stable connections.

It’s also super quick when you need to change your IP for various applications. It’s also fairly cheap, and great if you need a VPN that works with Netflix or other apps that block some more common VPN providers like PIA.
PIA is another good option–mainly because it’s cheaper than TorGuard, and has the same speeds. However, it doesn’t have as many features, the same customer support reliability, and it hasn’t grown as much as TorGuard has this year (it’s had a lot of cool updates).
Lastly, if you want one of the most polished, fast, and easy to use VPNs, check out ExpressVPN. It’s not as cheap as the other two options, but it’s still great to use with gaming.
