UK ISPs Send Piracy Alerts – How to Protect Yourself

If you live in the UK, and you actively pirate media content, you might want to start rethinking how you use torrenting or what lengths you should go to protect yourself. Because starting in 2017, ISPs will begin emailing you if you are caught pirating illegal media.

It’s similar in the US, and some ISPs–in conjunction with music and media industries, are starting cracking down (like Time Warner) threatening to turn off and cancel internet subscriptions in an attempt to crack down on pirating. In the UK, it could be similar.

If you torrent in the UK without using a BitTorrent proxy or VPN, it’s very easy for these companies to see your IP–which can then be given to your ISP to send you an email. They can find your account and know exactly what things you are downloading.

ISPS and Copyright Companies KNOW what you are doing!!!

The reason is that when you torrent, you willingly participate in a peer-to-peer network, and there is a tab in every torrent program which shows each person’s IP part of the BitTorrent download swarm. ISPs and these media-protection companies have tools that can in a way, use mass surveillance and recording techniques like deep packet inspection to decipher and send these notices around. So when you get a file that is flagged as copyright infringement, this is how you get an email and a warning.

For the most part, these warnings aren’t that big of a deal, but if the UK’s current plans on surveillance are any indication of the future, you should start considering how to protect your information from leaking out. Tons of organizations are going to start having access to your data unless you encrypt it and use anonymous shared IPs.

The best way to encrypt all of your internet traffic, as well as torrent traffic, is to use a VPN. All you have to do is turn the VPN on, and your traffic will be encrypted so it can’t be logged by authorities, and your IP in the torrent swarm will be different so your ISP can’t identify and target you.

For now, I would recommend TorGuard as a good VPN to use in the UK since they are the most privacy-focused affordable VPN that works well for torrenting. They have excellent speeds.
