How to Unthrottle Internet from Verizon with VPN

If you have Verizon internet–bad news, the truth is that your internet speeds may be throttled now and in the future. In fact, Verizon has gone so far as to admit it, after Redditors started doing research on how Verizon handles streaming speeds.

When asked about the speeds, Verizon came up with some vague PR statement. “We’ve been doing network testing over the past few days to optimize the performance of video applications on our network,” a Verizon Wireless spokesperson said. “The testing should be completed shortly. The customer video experience was not affected.”

In fact, the customer video experience was affected with negative speeds. Think about it for a second. Why would Verizon want customers getting the best speeds for a third party app like Netflix? What they really want is customers to use their video streaming services and use their TV cable programs so they can generate more revenue.

By subtly throttling and “optimizing” user speeds, they can make customers more incentive to use their products. In fact, we already are seeing providers like AT&T use gigabit programs and sales to steer customers one way or another. ISPs, without regulations formerly in place in the US, can now slap charges on data as easy as 1,2,3. Say goodbye to net neutrality.

So how can you keep your same internet provider, not pay more money, and keep your speeds up for video games, and HD streaming on YouTube and Netflix? Well, the simple answer is to use a VPN.

Do I need a VPN for Verizon?

What is a VPN? Well if you’re new to VPNs, don’t worry-they are easy to use. VPN stands for virtual private network, and the basic idea is that you install an app that connects your computer to a remote server that assigns you a new IP and encrypts your traffic.

When you do this, your ISP can’t throttle your speeds, collect data about your browser use and application services, and they can’t even monitor your torrent activity to send you copyright notices to scare you off P2P activity.

So you got it. When you use a VPN with Verizon, or even another internet service provider like AT&T, you can actually increase your speeds and uncap your connection. The question is, which VPN is the man for the job?

For now, if you want the best speeds for Netflix and Verizon, I would recommend none other than TorGuard VPN. It has the best speeds, the best customer service, and with their dedicated IP add-on you can actually unblock Netflix anywhere in the world and access the US version. We wrote a HUGE guide on how to use TorGuard VPN with Netflix here, to get rid of the “dreaded Netflix Proxy Error”.

As the Reddit user tested, you can see using a VPN with Verizon can definately improve your speeds.

No VPN = 27 mbps With VPN = 24 mbps

Fast.com speed test No VPN = 9 mbps With VPN = 17 mbps

So there is throttling from what I’m seeing. VPN gets past the throttle.
