VPN Guide to

What is a dedicated IP address?

A dedicated IP address is an IP address that is only used by one user. Most VPNs like to use shared IP addresses that are shared by hundreds of users so that each user can remain anonymous. While dedicated IP addresses aren’t as secure regarding anonymity, they have their advantages as well.

Dedicated IP addresses can’t be blacklisted as easily as shared IP addresses. Media services like Netflix, BBC, and Hulu have become increasingly adept at rooting out shared IP addresses from VPN companies and blacklisting them, which causes a proxy/VPN block. If you have a dedicated IP address, it is much easier to remain hidden and lessen the chance of a blacklist.

Dedicated IP addresses are also useful for accessing web sites that get triggered when you have a different IP than normal. Sometimes Gmail or Banks require you to re-verify your account in some way which can be a hassle. It’s also common for video game applications to require additional online logins since they cannot recognize your computer as one registered to the account.

Have you decided to invest into a dedicated IP address to watch streaming content like Netflix, BBC, or Hulu? First, you’ll need a VPN that even supports dedicated IP addresses.

Important note about media streaming and picking a VPN provider for dedicated IPs:

Sometimes services can work with media services without dedicated IP addresses–although this is becoming less likely and sometimes even services that have dedicated IPs won’t work with streaming services. This is why some users will experience workability with some VPN providers without using a dedicated IP address.

That said, not every VPN provider designs dedicated IP addresses and they don’t always function the same way. It’s a tricky trial and error process too–since some VPNs don’t provide the same amount of support for dedicated IPs on the off chance that one gets blacklist. Not all VPNs on this list will work well with Netflix, Hulu, or BBC–only those that have been tested and noted here below as such will.

Besides differentiating what a dedicated IP address is, it’s also important to delineate why you should pick a particular IP address from a provider. Many people think that setting up one’s server with a dedicated IP address can help or be a flawless solution, but many data center IP addresses are blocked. It’s important to pick a specialized IP address from a provider that will provide replacements if one is blocked.

TorGuard VPN is the best choice for getting a dedicated IP address ($7.99 per month)  if you want to stream Netflix, Hulu, or BBC. 1. PureVPN is crap, they sell you a static IP then tell you a week later that they can no longer offer it but don’t worry they will give you a regular IP in the USA and refund you the extra $5 you paid for the static IP. If your trying to use the IP’s they give you for streaming your out of luck because they are always blocked within a day or two. The online Customer service is great, but they have nothing to offer you except IP’s that are already blacklisted. It’s like talking to a polite Parrot, they keep saying use this URL and resolve the IP’s. OK I have done that and none of them work. Oh well Give us a few days. You come back in two days and its the same story.

  2. You fail to mention another application of a VPN dedicated (static) IP address: Routing incoming traffic. These allow external access to a network, even if you do not have a static IP address from your ISP. To run your own HTTP server, for example. Most VPN providers do not support this, even if they do have dedicated IP addresses.

  4. My question:
Is a dedicated IP still anonymous?
If as an example the F/B:I asked for logs, and you are the only person that’s ever used the log, will the VPN still say they don’t know as no logs are kept. Is there a way to connect you to a dedicated IP and still be totally anon? Thanks

    • Dedicated IPs aren’t as secure. If you are a cyber criminal worried about the FBI chances are you aren’t willing to risk any security. Hackers wouldn’t have much use for a dedicated IP. Dedicated IPs are mainly for Netflix geo-unblockers, or VPN users who want some extra convenience factor. For the basic user who wants to stay secure from hackers, and have secure torrenting, you can use your dedicated IP for specific instances and when you don’t want to, you can use anon IPs.
