Bitcoin is a great cryptocurrency in many ways since the Bitcoin network isn’t owned by anyone and the transaction fees are very low. One of the faults of Bitcoin is that every transaction can be traced around. Sure, this is one of the good things about Bitcoin since it makes the marketplace and thus the transactions that form it very transparent.
One reason normal banking in the world becomes so corrupt is that so many transactions are hidden. This makes it harder for criminals to use Bitcoin, but the bad thing is that some criminals can also take advantage of this transparency to track down users with a lot of Bitcoin to steal or trace Bitcoin users.
So this is where Zcash comes in. One bad thing is that it is owned by a company, but the good thing is that each transaction is encrypted so it’s more secure for the end user. Zcash uses modified Bitcoin software to allow users a choice whenever a transaction takes place. You can either use a normal address, or a “shielded” address. If two people use these shielded addresses, the Zcash blockchain does not record the transaction publicly. Sure, you might be thinking that this would create more problems than it would solve–like for instance, what stops counterfeit Zcash?
Zcash prevents issues like this since it uses special cryptographic functions called zk-SNARKs. That stands for Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-interactive Arguments of Knowledge. The basic idea is that two computers can take encrypted data and prove certain limited facts about that data without revealing said data. This system allows the verification of all outgoing transactions equals all incoming transactions.
