Russia Bans LocalBitcoins – Best VPNS for LocalBitcoins.com

LocalBitcoins.com, one of the most popular Bitcoin trading networks in Russia, has now been banned by the Russian government. While Russia’s government hasn’t  made a complete stance against Bitcoin, this is an indication that they are against it, and its a sign of things to come.

We’ve seen similar issues in countries like China, Iran, and increasingly Russia–where these governments are forcibly removing platforms from their population that generate discussion and the flow of ideas. Now in the case of Russia, it’s all about the flow of a non-government controlled currency. Bitcoin to be exact.

Digital freedom and thus access to Bitcoin should never be restricted. Unfortunately, as we just mentioned, free speech and access to content are becoming more and more limited.

Governments are beginning to learn how the importance of the internet and how to control citizens instead of giving them what they deserve (the United Nations believe access to the web is a fundamental human right).

At the end of the day, regardless of where you live or who decides to take away your deserved freedom, you can still retain it by using robust VPNs. While LocalBitcoins recommends some ways to access LocalBitcoins to use the site, we don’t agree with their recommended VPNs since we’ve exclusively tested VPNs in detail to find the best VPNs for LocalBitcoins.com. For this site, you need some VPNs that work great in Russia, which means Private Internet Access is out of the question.

Both Mullvad and NordVPN have apps that are often glitchy and perform poorly with bad speeds and unreliable mobile applications. IPVanish is OK but not suitable for torrenting since the Windows version doesn’t have a kill switch, and the application suite is a bit cluttered. Instead, I would recommend or atleast compare the following VPNS:

Best VPNS for LocalBitcoins.com

VPN Price Editor Review Rating User Review Rating
GhostVPN $9.99  9.2  9.9
TorGuard VPN $7.50 (with 25% discount from code “Best10VPN”  9.8  8.1
ExpressVPN $12.95  8.6  6.9
IPVanish $9.99  8.1  6.3
NordVPN $8  6.2  5.9
Mullvad $6.50  4.7  4.3

TorGuard is great to use in Russia with LocalBitcoins.com. They are a fervent supporter of all forms of cryptocurrency, and you can even pay for their service with it. Not only that but along with GhostVPN they simply have the best service to use in censored countries like Russia that don’t like when users use VPNs to bypass blockades they have put up. With TorGuard, if you aren’t satisfied, they also allow you to get quick Bitcoin refunds, whereas some other services like NordVPN don’t even offer Bitcoin refunds.

TorGuard has Stealth VPN servers which are hidden compared to normal VPN servers since they make your VPN traffic appear like normal. In addition, their Stealth Proxy service works to hide your VPN as a double layered approach.

GhostVPN, while new, is another one of my favorite VPNs to use with LocalBitcoins.com since it has the exact same method as TorGuard–putting security, speeds, and lots of server connections first–making it another good recommendation. I like using GhostVPN even more than TorGuard VPN since it has a better interface (just looks newer and I like the ghostly aesthetic) and I find that it has just as fast of speeds as TorGuard VPN.

Lastly, ExpressVPN is another good option since it has such a good setup and is very user-friendly overall. However, it’s more expensive and has fewer security features than the other two best VPNs for LocalBitcoins.com.
