Don’t let ISPs Monetize Web History: Here’s How

Money

Ever since the FCC’s privacy rules were voted out of the picture by the US government, the internet users have felt vulnerable, and their ISPs have got a green light when it comes to selling the private user data. For many of the US citizens, this is not acceptable, and those who knew how have already started finding ways of protecting themselves and their privacy, and making it that much harder for the ISP to make money off their web search. If you don’t know how to protect yourself and your privacy, let’s see some of the ways of doing that.

The “Opt out” option

Back in 2015, AT&T has offered their customers a cheaper data package in exchange for allowing them to keep and analyze private user data like browsing history and alike. This offer came with an “opt out” option, for those who decide to go back on the deal. That’s one way of keeping your private data private.

HTTPS

In case you didn’t know, the protocol that’s used for enabling the information exchange online, the HTTP, has a safer version – HTTPS. When you access the website, and the link starts with HTTPS, that means that all the data that’ll be exchanged is encrypted, and even though this is not the perfect option, it will still limit the data amount that your ISP will get. The other reason why this is not the best option is the fact that not every website supports HTTPS. Still, it’s pretty helpful with those that do.

Tor network

Tor network is a good way to hide your online traffic data since it hides your information by sending all of your traffic through thousands of relays around the worldwide network. This is completely free, as is downloading Tor. However it does come with some restrictions. For example, the security reasons prevent you from using Windows or even Google. This, again, doesn’t make an ideal solution, but it does help for those who don’t mind getting used to some changes.

VPN

The best and currently one of the most popular solutions is the use of a VPN. This is a kind of software that allows the user a private network access and does a lot to keep your online activities private and anonymous. It works through many servers located around the world that you can use at will and hide your true location and data flow. And that’s only the beginning of what VPNs can do and offer to their users, so let’s explore them a bit further.

Why should you choose a VPN

As we mentioned before, VPNs are becoming increasingly popular, and not without reason. They can do many things to help you keep your privacy. The use of servers that we mentioned before helps with changing your IP address, and instead, you’re assigned with an address from the area in which the server is located. So, if you’re from France and you use an American server, the internet will “see” you as an American. This not only hides your location but also allows you to view the online content that’s only available in the US.

Next, VPNs encrypt your data, creating a secure tunnel and sending your data flow through it. This means that no one, including your ISP, can see what you’re doing online. And what they can’t see, they can’t record, which leaves them with nothing to sell. VPNs also don’t log any of your activities, so there’s no danger of them thinking of doing something like selling your data. They offer many more features, like blocking the ads, protecting you from malware and hacking attacks, and more.

Secure your data with TorGuard

TorGuard is one of the VPN providers that does everything mentioned above, and even more since it has several different packages that you can choose, depending on the level of security and protection that you need. For example, if you only wish to hide the content of your emails, you can use Anonymous Email package. There are four packages in total, and the most expensive one will only cost a bit more than $11 a month. That’s $11 per month for complete protection, privacy and unlimited online content for every place in the world.

The decision is yours, of course. There are many VPNs out there, but when it comes to quality service, you’ll have a hard time finding a better deal than this.
