Update on Netflix Proxy Error 2018

We’ve been doing a large amount of testing and listening to VPN users on social media as well as talking to customer live chat agents from various VPN providers. It’s been nearly two years now since Netflix starting the Netflix Proxy Error crusade! If you’re reading this, chances are that you have encountered the following Netflix proxy error. “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy service.”

When I first encountered the Netflix Proxy error, I had a bad feeling that Netflix wouldn’t so easily back down from their proclamation. Now, in 2018, Netflix is becoming even HARDER to access with a VPN to avoid the now mythically evil Netflix Proxy Error. However, despite many blocked IPs and user frustrations–we still have one VPN that we can confidently report working with Netflix tested to be working with Netflix.

TorGuard still works to prevent the Netflix Proxy Error. Basically, what you do is purchase a “dedicated IP” on checkout as add-on, then send in a ticket to request it. It works with pretty much any Netflix version and they have servers available for US, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, and UK. These dedicated IPs even work with Amazon Video, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and other streaming services online you need access to.

How to Unblock the Netflix Proxy Error to Get US Netflix

Netflix Proxy Error? Here are VPNs That Still Work

Step #1 Go to TorGuard‘s website and click “buy now” under VPN subscription on the main page.

Step #2 Pick your preferred plan. My favorite is the two year plan since it’s an awesome deal, $99 for 2 years is roughly $4 a month! Or you can just do the short term commitment and pick the monthly cost. You can also use my special discount code to make the two year plan equate to something like $2 a month!! (Keep reading).

Step #3 Once you do that, you need to select “dedicated IP” with the US Streaming option. After this go to checkout and use the promo code “Best10VPN“. This is my SPECIAL code for you to give you 50% both off your dedicated IP and VPN subscription.

Step #4 Once you purchase your add-on and VPN subscription, don’t forget to send in a support ticket to TorGuard requesting your own UNIQUE dedicated streaming IP! This is essential, (and a bit of a hassle), but their support team is very competent and you’ll have your IP in no time! And if it does get blocked, they’ll refresh it free of charge.

Step#5 Once you get your dedicated streaming IP, you’ll need to start TorGuard’s app and go to “more settings”. Then go to “Servers”. Here is where you can enter your IP to access the CW to watch Black Lightning, Netflix, Hulu, or any other service. (SEE ABOVE). Once you save that IP, go ahead and connect to it in the servers tab on the main page of the app. Once you connect, you’ll be good to go to stream content all you want!

HOT TIP: Wondering about TorGuard vs ExpressVPN for Netflix, which is better? If you see other websites advertising ExpressVPN, know that this deal is MUCH cheaper with TorGuard. ExpressVPN is TWICE the cost.

Some VPNs that no longer work with Netflix (tested and verified):

ExpressVPN and NordVPN can work with Netflix, but I’ve had a lot of complaints here on the site and my Youtube channel with users claiming they don’t work! So be careful!

Best Free VPN for Netflix Proxy Error?

Netflix Proxy Error? Here are VPNs That Still Work

DON’T DO IT!

Using a free VPN to avoid the Netflix Proxy error is a recipe for disaster. You won’t be able to find a free VPN that works with Netflix AT ALL. Most free VPNs are incredibly slow, have 0 customer support representatives, and could be scams that screw with your data and sell it to advertisers or trick you into purchasing paid add-ons.

I’d check out this article here on free VPNs to get a better idea of why free VPNs are just bad in general. Free proxies are the same too.

Do you have a Netflix Proxy Error?

Netflix recently announced a press release detailing their new aggressive stance against VPNs. David Fullgar, Vice President of Content Delivery, explained “for now, given the historical practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory. In the meantime, we will continue to respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location.”

For those of you who subscribe to Netflix because you can use a VPN with it–Netflix doesn’t want your money. They only want customers who are willing to stay restricted by geo-location. Even if you’re a paying Netflix customer in the US traveling to China for vacation, or even if you’re in the US just using a VPN–everything is a no go when VPNs come into play. And surprisingly, Netflix’s attempts to block VPNs have been surprisingly active.

Many users who use Netflix with VPNs are reporting difficulties with the service, getting the error ““You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” The issue stems from Netflix blacklisting VPN IP addresses that VPN clients use. This has been an issue for awhile, but Netflix is stepping up their game. For example, if you’re using a VPN with a Los Angeles server, that  IP address might be 102.21.3210. If Netflix blacklists “102.21.3210” as an invalid VPN IP address, then every user connecting to that VPN server will face difficulty.

Some users on Reddit are reporting issues with Tunnel Bear VPN, and for those who are brave enough to use Hola (botnet much?), they are encountering errors that show this message:

Netflix Proxy Error? Here are VPNs That Still Work

As of right now, there are also reports coming in from Private Internet Access VPN users that they cannot access Netflix on US connections. One user from PIA explained “PIA told me they can’t help me access geo-blocked content illegally,” and that he “didn’t know violating licensing agreements between third parties was illegal.” This makes sense given this page here. We’ve also noted users complaining about DotVPN.

What causes Netflix Proxy Error?

So what really causes the Netflix Proxy Error?

Netflix has advanced detection techniques that allow them to trigger a warning to users when they detect a shared IP. We have covered the differences between a shared IP versus a dedicated IP many times, like in this article here, but the main idea is that when you connect to Netflix without a VPN, you have your own unique IP address. However, when you connect to a popular proxy or VPN server, you are sharing that same IP with thousands of other users (which is great for anonymity) but bad for accessing Netflix.

So the only TRUE way to get permanent access to Netflix is by using the dedicated IP approach so Netflix can’t eventually root and detect your proxy/VPN use. For now, the best option is what we recommended already, TorGuard’s unique “dedicated IP streaming” service.

Will Netflix Give up on Netflix Proxy Error?

Netflix Proxy Error? Here are VPNs That Still Work

So will Netflix ever give up on blocking VPNs and proxies? It’s hard to say in a lot of ways, but we’ve already seen some indicators that no, Netflix WILL not give up on blocking proxies and VPNs, so you might have to suck it up and buy a VPN to unblock the Netflix Proxy Error.  They still have this page live, after all.

Last year, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings admitted that he didn’t really care about users who couldn’t access Netflix they wanted to. They don’t CARE that they are blocking people. “It’s a very small but quite vocal minority,” Hastings said.

“We are but a little boat in a vast sea,” the company’s executives wrote in a letter to shareholders. “We earn a tiny fraction of consumers’ time and money, and have lots of opportunities ahead to win more of your evenings away from all those other activities if we keep improving.”

Doesn’t look good right?

Fortunately, VPNs like TorGuard still continue the good fight. We will keep updating this Netflix Proxy Error article in 2018, so bookmark it, and stick around!

Is Netflix That Great in 2018 Anyway?

So since the Netflix Proxy Error is so annoying, is Netflix worth the hassle?

Well, unfortunately, in a lot of ways, Netflix still continues to be king in 2018. Netflix now has a crazy good catalogue with new and continually updated shows like Stranger Things, DareDevil, House of Cards, Luke Cage, Sense8, Narcos, Black Mirror, The Defenders, Orange is the New Black, Iron Fist, The Crown, Master of None, Voltron, Making A Murderer, and the list goes ON.

They are also the premier provider to feature Disney content, so Star Wars fans rejoice!

Best Netflix Alternatives in 2018?

Netflix Proxy Error? Here are VPNs That Still Work

Well, if you hate Netflix, but still want to stream content, you could use something like Hulu or Amazon Prime. Both of these providers do block proxy use too–but not as liberally, and a VPN like TorGuard still works.

I’d recommend Hulu if you want to catch up on old shows since it has a TON of old shows like the Simpsons, Shark Tank, Survivor, and more. It’s also great for Rick and Morty.

If you want some amazing exclusives, definitely check out Amazon Prime since it has great shows like Sneaky Pete from an amazing director (the director was Walt in Breaking Bad, and he’s also in the show as Vince!!!).

TIP: Can’t access these either? TorGuard still works to unblock these services as well.

How to Unblock Netflix Proxy Error on Xbox One

[TIP watch the PS4 Video below, it will work with any streaming device!)

Watching Netflix on the Xbox One is a great experience–since it’s so user friendly and intuitive on the console, but if you are trying to connect to the US content library through your Xbox One but you aren’t in the US, you are going to have a hard time and you will encounter the dreaded Netflix Proxy Error.

Step #1

The first thing you will need to do to unblock the Netflix Proxy Error on Xbox One is to get a VPN subscription. Click here, and start your checkout. I’d recommend the 6-month deal since its the cheapest. You will also need to purchase a dedicated IP on checkout.

Step #2

Secondly, you will need to get a VPN router. I know this sounds like a pain in the ass, but it’s the best and probably the only way! VPN routers are great for many other things too, like encrypting all of your internet connection (on your phone, computer, etc) I’d recommend getting this  TP-Link one. The good news is that you can easily set it up with TorGuard’s free VPN router tool!

Step #3

Once you get your tool downloaded, you can use it and integrate your dedicated IP into it and connect your Xbox to the router.

Step#4

Connect to Netflix with your new dedicated IP integrated into your connection and you are good to go!

I love watching Netflix on my PlayStation 4, and many others do, but the only problem is that the best Netflix catalog for PS4 requires you to be within the US. So in order to avoid getting a Netflix Proxy Error, you need to look as if you are in the US to watch US Netflix content.

I’d recommend this one since it works well with TorGuard’s VPN router setup tool. Simply plug in your US dedicated IP into the setup and your router will be good to go.

Step #3

Connect the Ps4 to your router’s connection and Netflix will work!

Step #3

Once your VPN router is setup with the dedicated IP, you can now watch Netflix unblocked on your Kodi device.

  1. Thanks for sharing this info! I just signed up for Torguard and got my flix back! PRO TIP: Make sure you ask the torguard support for access to the netflix servers as they keep these on the down low. All the other servers I tried were blocked so you have to ask them to give you access.

  3. I DON’T use a VPN and am getting this error. Netflix will not speak to my ISP about it and my ISP is at a loss as to what to do. My $7.99 a month isn’t much, but Netflix is about to lose me as a customer.

    • I’m sorry to hear this is an issue for you. Since Netflix is being so aggressive with VPNs, many customers are finding that their IP addresses have been mistakenly blacklisted. You have two options. Cancel Netflix, or use TorGuard like we suggested to get around your Netflix block.

      • I just spoke with Netflix about the error and they told me it had nothing to do with them it was the ISP they said they are global with no restrictions the guy just kept dismissing everything you talked about in the article as being not true and he said even the iPhone app for Netflix wasn’t made by Netflix! In response to that whopper of a statement I asked him directly how the App Store Netflix listing says it’s provided by Netflix Inc. and he said no that’s not true just call Apple and they will tell me Apple made it. The information I was given was laughably ridiculous but he was very very clear Netflix is not having any thing to do with the VPN blocking he claims it is the ISPs or someone it wasn’t quite clear trying to put Netflix out of business he says because they’re taking their customers or something. It didn’t really make a lot of sense most of what he said was patently nonsense. Very irritating very frustrating so I thought I would share.

  4. Hi, I read somewhere that ExpressVPN is the best for Netflix. I just signed up, and can’t access netflix where i want to. I’m still well within my day money back period, so I can always get my money back if needed. Would you advise leaving ExpressVPN and moving to Tor?

        • Just to be clear TJ, I’m not recommending the use of “Tor”, but TorGuard VPN. Tor is much different than a VPN. Tor will most likely be blocked for Netflix and will only give slow speeds.

          • That’s fine. I figured it was TorGuard VPN. Thanks again.

  5. Doesn’t work as advertised.

The free IP they give you ONLY unlocks access to Netflix USA.

If you want to watch Netflix in any other region you have to buy a dedicated IP address ($55 per year) for each region you want to unlock.

So, to clarify, if you want to watch Netflix Brazil it’ll cost you $60 + $55 for Anonymous VPN and a dedicated IP.

If you want to watch Netflix Netherlands on top of that it’ll be another $55 for another dedicated IP, and so on.

NOT the service I’m looking for…

    Reply
    • Hey Jon, thanks for your comment.

TorGuard is the service you are looking for, from what I can tell that you want anyway. As I described in the post, there are two different sorts of IP addresses TorGuard is using. It’s a bit complex, I know that, but it’s a complex problem Netflix has created here…

TorGuard is offering free shared dedicated IP addresses for users upon their request. If you ask for shared dedicated IP to access Netflix in Brazil, Netherlands, and the United States, they will give you one for each location without charge.

If you want to purchase your own unique dedicated IP (not shared dedicated IP) you would have to purchase one for each location, but that is not necessary for Netflix, or very plausible for any need.

      Reply
      • Hi Tom, I am trying to TorGuard, and the Netflix regions they told me can be used are US, UK, Germany, and Canada. I tried these 4, and they do indeed work. For any other region with TorGuard, one needs to get a dedicated IP for that region I was told.

I am also testing NordVPN, and it’s working (on my computer) for Netflix USA, Amazon Prime, and Hulu so far. I have some other regions to check out when time allows.

        Reply
        • Glad to hear it’s working out for you. We recommend TorGuard over NordVPN in any case, since TG has better speeds and applications.

          Reply
          • After trying out both, I came to the same conclusion, and went with TorGuard for a whole year. NordVPN’s speeds are lower and the implementation on the iphone is extremely cumbersome. Even though NordVPN’s app has a leaner appearance, it’s not possible to select different servers within the app, only by going into System Preferences.

  6. This NetFlix access problem just started for us using UnoTelly VPN. I doubt NetFlix cares that much about protecting content since they looked the other way for so many years. What’s changed is that the company is pushing to make inroads into foreign markets. And I think this is just part of the marketing strategy. We’ll probably drop UnoTelly and switch to local NetFlix. Yet, I do find it really annoying that I no longer have an English subtitle option and less selection.

  8. TorGuard definitely works for accessing netflix in US, Canada, UK, and Germany with any of their normal VPN memberships. Once you purchase a membership, you will want to submit a ticket asking for the shared IP links for the country you need. Any other countries will require a dedicated IP to be purchased.

Once given, simply ping the link(s) in your cmd prompt and input the IP that appears into a new server within their install client.

  13. I just enquired about the shared dedicated ID with TorGuard before suscribing and it seems they don’t offer it anymore. They only offer dedicated IP adresses, which is much more expansive and not worth it, I won’t pay couple hundred dollars a year on top on my netflix membership. At that price, you buy or you rent the movies/tv shows you really want… Is there any OTHER affordable options available ?

    Reply
    • Dedicated IP is only $8 a month. How is that hundreds of dollars per year? It’s really still the cheapest option seeing how some other VPN providers that offer the ability to work with Netflix are even MORE expensive.

I understand your frustration with the issue, but TorGuard is not to blame here. It’s really Netflix is pushing harder and harder against VPN providers. You might be thinking–why doesn’t TorGuard give you these things for free?

Well, even though I’m not a part of the TorGuard team–just a reviewer here giving recommendations, I can imagine it’s a huge drain on their resources to constantly find new IPs and swap them for free. Dedicated IPs are much more reliable, and in the end, more useful for users wanting to access Netflix. See this article we wrote on dedicated IPs. In the end, there is a reason why almost every VPN provider is having the same issue, and a vast majority have simply given up.

If you want to access Netflix without a dedicated IP, you might be able to find some gimmick options springing up that always fail in a few days. Besides that, these free fixes are often scam–or unsupported projects, and you can’t know for certain how they handle your data.
