If you know anything about websites, you know that the best ones that are the most secure use SSL encryption, which is shown by the “HTTPS” in front of the URL bar. Facebook, Google, Banking sites, Crypto exchanges, and more use this type of secure encryption. So you might be wondering, why do I need a VPN if the website is secure using HTTPS? Well, there are plenty of reasons!
#1 Not Every Website uses HTTPS!
The first obvious reason is that not every website uses HTTPS, so if you have a password on website not secured, and the same password on another website, well you could have just given up your password!
#2 Metadata Can be Captured Still!
If you are accessing a website that uses HTTPS in a public Wi-Fi hotspot, it is still possible for a snooping user to identify which website you are using since they can still capture metadata. However, if you were using a VPN, they could not see this metadata since the data is encrypted and hidden.
#3 Vulnerable to Man in the Middle Attacks
Not only can a VPN protect your metadata, but it can also protect you from local hijacks and breach attacks on the network. It is very possible for someone to hijack your initial SSL handshake recognition which means that you could visit a fake website with faulty security. #4 Some Websites only Authenticate with HTTPS
Additionally, some websites use authentication over HTTPS when you login, and then throughout the course of a session the session ID may be processed and loaded on the web server, taking up less computer resources to load HTTPS, but by loading HTTP, it makes the website less secure. Some websites like Facebook do this, whereas some other more secure services like Gmail use HTTPS for entire sessions.
#5 VPN + HTTPS is VERY Safe
So as you can see, while HTTPS is generally safe, there are still plenty of vulnerabilities to have that a VPN can help solve.
