Bitcoin, once the king and only cryptocurrency out there, now shares a huge market cap with tons of other “altcoins” or alternative coins. Litecoin, now doing very well, was one of the first altcoins out there. Now we have other coins like Ethereum, and also Monero. While some VPNs accept Bitcoin, not that many VPNs accept altcoins like Monero.

But what is Monero exactly? Why use Monero over Bitcoin to purchase a VPN or to use it at all?The biggest reason that people like and use Monero is for privacy reasons. And if you’re a VPN fan, this sounds very good.

What is Monero? How is it Different than Bitcoin?

Bitcoin’s entire block chain is transparent, which means that funds can be researched and traced. Bitcoin uses a public record methodology of transactions, whereas with Monero, every time money is sent the original sender is anonymous and no one knows how much the transaction was worth.

With Bitcoin, if you put a address up on the web and receive funds, users can easily see how much money is being sent to that address. Monero  uses a technology called ring signatures which means that it is taking advantage of a special use case of cryptography that allows each transaction to be hidden.

If you research the question “What VPNs Support Monero?”, by yourself, before this article, you probably wouldn’t have found much. Maybe you found out that a VPN called “Cryptostorm” supports Monero payments. But have you seen our Cryptostorm review yet? Trust me, there are better VPNs.

Also, it seems like Cryptostorm no longer supports Monero. I found a user named Lorax on a forum explain that “Cryptostorm doesn’t appear to support Monero directly anymore.”

One way to pay for a VPN with Monero is just to trade it with something like Shapeshift.io that lets you convert coins easily. However, if you just want to pay for a VPN with Monero directly, you can do so with TorGuard.

TorGuard supports a TON of cryptocurrencies, and they definately will let you buy a subscription with Monero. Here’s our TorGuard Review.
