What are VPN Tunnels?

VPNs are becoming more and more popular everyday. Since their inception, they have been used to increase user privacy at the workplace, at home, and on the go. People use VPNs to torrent without leaking their IP, to secure files and corporate data, to stop internet service provider tracking, and more!

However, you still might be wondering how a VPN works, why you need one, or if they work that well. In this article, we are going to clarify exactly what a VPN is, and what a VPN tunnel is.

What are VPN tunnels?

What are VPN Tunnels?

So how do VPNs work through VPN tunnels? Well, a VPN works by securing data by sending information from your computer out to a VPN server through a secure tunnel. This tunnel is a layer of encryption constructed by protocols like OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec (read this article to learn about the difference between VPN protocols OpenVPN vs PPTP vs L2TP IPsec etc).

You connect from your computer from your ISP, then you send your data through the tunnel secured by the protocols which then makes your outgoing traffic to websites, apps services, and anything you connect to encrypted.

Which VPNs have the best security?

What are VPN Tunnels?

If you want to have the best security and the best VPN tunnel, you’ll need a VPN that doesn’t log your information. This means that when you connect to their server, they don’t store any of the data you transmit. VPNs are made for security, so you want to make sure that you’re actually securing your data instead of just picking some other company to use it. This is usually what happens with free VPNs.

If you pick a paid VPN with good security, you can rest assured that your VPN tunnel will be VERY secure. Look for a VPN that offers top of the line AES-256 encryption, SHA-512, and offers extra options like DNS and IPv6 protection, and even extra proxy features within the app.

My recommendation of the VPN with the best security is TorGuard, and for multiple reasons. They have AES-256 encryption which is the strongest you get, but they also have options like Stealth VPN which is great since it lets you bypass strict firewalls (whether in specific countries, schools or workplaces). They have a good no log policy, as well as good customer support to back up all their products. AND, they work with Netflix!

My second option to recommend to you is Private Internet Access. They are one of the cheapest VPNS out there, with a low monthly cost, but they still offer a good app, good speeds, and they have a decent reputation (one of the most popular VPNs).

IPVanish is another good option, although admittedly, it does stand out a bit less than the other two options. It’s a bit more standard in pricing and features, but the speeds and security are also top knotch. Check out the table below to see a good comparison of IPVanish vs TorGuard vs Private Internet Access.
